New metal roof

We replaced our original (32-year-old) shingle roof with a metal one. The cocoa brown color matches the house perfectly. We also added a suntube skylight in the kitchen to bring in some light – ever since we added the porch and took away its outside windows it’s been pretty dark in there. Now it’s filled with light most of the day!

Greg’s beard doppelganger

I uncovered some forgotten photos when I cleared the mini memory card off of my old flip phone.

This guy had the same beard color and texture as Greg….except their facial hair was in opposite places! You could have cut off Greg’s goatee and just about fit it in the bare space on this guy’s chin and have it look like one full beard.

OMG! The Internets! On my phone!

Greg’s ancient Razr flip phone has been acting up so we went to the Verizon store to see if he and I could upgrade our phones independently. Never thought I would end up walking out with a new iPhone!

I told the sales guy I was holding out for the iPhone 5. I had waited 4 years for iPhones to be available on Verizon (AT&T coverage is non-existent in our house)…..so what was a few more months to make sure I got the latest model? They usually come out in June/July, but I had heard they would likely be delayed until at least Sept, which he confirmed. The rep also told me that they were not going to be 4G phones. I’m not sure I entirely believe that, but thinking about waiting another 6 months to find out was a real drag.

So I ended up justifying switching now. I’ve wanted an iPhone badly for awhile now for several reasons….1) there has been many a time where it would have been handy to have Internet access in a store or on a road trip 2) as a web professional, I feel like I’m not keeping up with where my visitors are ever more likely to experience my site – on mobile 3) we have a new Exchange mail sever at work that will sync well with one 4) I’m tired of carrying around a separate phone, PDA and camera in my purse (or not having all three with me when I go somewhere without a purse) and 5) once the little Fazenbaby arrives I’ll want an easier way to email/post videos and pictures!

I know Android’s been an option on Verizon for awhile now, but since I have a MacBook at work, a MacBook at home, an Apple TV and an iPod Touch with a bunch of apps already….I wanted an iPhone so everything syncs and works seamlessly in happy Mac land. (Yes, I have drank the kool-aid.)

So far, no regrets….LOVE IT LOVE IT!

I know I shouldn’t be so excited about a new toy, but I’ve waited so long for this it is even sweeter to finally have it.

Gifts from those who fought before us

Read an inspiring quote today:

“Abortion and birth control are gifts from women who fought before us. We should learn from our history so we can hold our ground and make more gains for women today.”

— Candi Churchill
Gainesville Women’s Liberation
Speech commemorating the 38th anniversary of Roe v Wade

Now that I’m on the way to motherhood and all of the responsibilities and lifetime commitment that entails, I value more than ever my right to choose the time when undergoing this journey is right for me. It angers and saddens me to see this being eroded away for women throughout this country.

Up for #1, down for #2

water-saving multi-flush

This is the first time I’ve seen one of these…but it makes a lot of sense! Surprisingly, it was in the 4th oldest building on the UF campus, Smathers Library (1825). I want this for my toilets!

It’s a boy!

Well, the evidence is in and it is definitely a boy! (Already have a way to embarrass the poor kid too. hehe)

Going in I was going to be okay with either outcome. I was hoping for a boy because my husband is the youngest with three sisters who have five daughters between them. It would be fun to have the baby boy of his family have a boy of his own. On the other hand, I wanted to have a girl because, well, I think I could just relate better having been a little girl myself!

The ultrasound was a very surreal experience and definitely not at all what I expected. I’ve seen many in-utero still photos and thought all you would see would be blurry, blobish shapes that you could vaguely make out. I had no idea the live image would be so clear and that you could also see inside the baby…the beating heart, the bones of the spine! This video is but a clip of the roughly 20 minutes the tech spent surveying everything…measuring the brain cavity, the length of the leg bones, etc. She did leave inspecting the genital area until almost the end, building up the suspense I suppose. :)  It was also surprising how much the baby was moving. I guess I can only feel the real big movements at this point. Afterwards my husband asked if I had noticed how hard the tech was pressing down on the wand into my belly, but I hadn’t at all. I was too transfixed watching that little baby on the screen.

It definitely changes things to know the sex of the baby. Before I found out, I was imagining the different kinds of households either one would bring. Of course, either way there will be toys, sports and interests common to both, but there’s no denying that the subtle vibe of a home is just different depending on whether little boys or girls live there.

So a boy it is! I can dig it. Now, the tough part is coming up….names! Greg and I already had a few girls names we liked, but no boy names. They will be much harder. Time to start seriously studying the baby name book I got from the library.

On the move

Finally felt the baby move for the first time today. I was laying in bed before work with my hand on my belly – coincidentally wondering when it would happen and how exactly I would know – when I felt this little “tug.” I’ve had other friends say it feels like gas, but I wasn’t quite sure how to interpret that….that covers a big spectrum of sensations! I’d describe more like when you get an eye tic. A little involuntary twitch. My assistant at work said it feels like you have a fish inside you – that kinda works too!

I felt it twice briefly, then it stopped and I had to get ready for work. I had an early morning staff meeting and it started flopping around like crazy as I was sitting there. Hard to believe it went from first feeling to that much movement in the span of a few hours.

Fantasy Letter to the Editor #1

(I often compose angry letters to my local paper in my head that I’ll never actually have the balls to send in, mostly because I don’t want flaming bags of dog crap left on my door (or worse). At least now I have an outlet…)

It drives me crazy to hear conservatives wax poetic about much they care about “freedom” and “keeping the government out of your life” and at the same time trying to force their narrow-minded morality on everyone through legislation. If they truly lived up to their “don’t tread on me” principles, they wouldn’t fight to have the government tell you who you can marry, what kind of sexual life you’re allowed to have and how to plan your family. What a bunch of hypocrites.

That being said…

It is amazing to me how quickly I have transformed from being completely freaked out by even the thought of having a kid to calmly shopping for baby stuff. Due to very generous friends who have older kids already there’s now a room in my house with a crib, changing table and rocker in it, not to mention other little things like a bottle warmer, sippy cups, pacifiers, etc. A year ago I wouldn’t have been able to handle that.

stroller and car seat set

I went to visit my good friend Tam in Ft Myers this week, partly so she could coach me on what to buy. There’s just not a lot of options for baby gear in this college town, so I wanted to go to a Babies R Us to look at stroller/car seats (or “travel systems” as I now know to call them). As we approached the store she told me she couldn’t handle going in there until after she had her first baby and to let her know if I felt overwhelmed and wanted to leave. It wasn’t that bad…although my mind started to glaze over once an employee started going over features on multiple stroller setups. I took notes on a few of them and we had to leave to pick up her son at daycare. We went home and I did some online price shopping, read reviews and made a decision. Better to get it over with now and cross a big item off the list!

I returned to the store alone in the evening and wandered the aisles awhile before buying the stroller. I have to admit the only thing I had a hard time looking at was the breast pumps…yeah, can’t handle that thought yet. Otherwise I’m pretty proud of myself.
